About YONAGUNI ISLAND

Yonaguni Island is situated about 509 km southwest of Okinawa’s main island, about 127 km from Ishigaki Island, and about 1,900 km from Tokyo.
The island measures 27.49 km in circumference, covers a 28.95 m2 area, and is the westernmost point of Japan.
Taiwan, its neighbor, is located about 111 km away, and Taiwan’s mountains can be seen from Yonaguni Island several times a year.
People are drawn to Yonaguni Island for its nature, culture, and history, and for the rugged power of the tempestuous waves that crash against its sheer cliffs, all of which create a unique atmosphere not found on any of the other Yaeyama Islands.

There are three villages on Yonaguni Island—Sonai is the one located on the eastern side. It is the central village of the island, where the town hall and clinic are located.
